Morning Edition - 9/13/05

Oh Katrina; You Bad-Bad Girl
Add another 40 bodies to the mounting Katrina death toll. Officials found the bodies at the New Orleans hospital. Some insiders say that some of those bodies were already in the hospital morgue – dead days before the storm - but workers who were at the site say temperatures in the power-deprived hospital reached a whopping 106 degrees. Over 200,000 survivors will be provided temporary housing using trailer homes in Louisiana for the next five years. These homes are expected to create temporary cities. Sidebar: Does anyone see a potential for another deprived slum area?

DC Down Low; Well, The Straight Version
Washington DC has long been known for its fleet of government workers. Most DC residents don’t really know what their neighbors even do for a living. Now CBS plans to create a program around the private lives of DC folks who work in classified and covert operations. Elwood Reid is in the midst of writing the script and he will co-executive produce with Larry Sanitsky.

The Ski Trip; Thanks Logo
Logo, a new gay channel that had its debut after many missed deadlines this past June, finally gave me some cream-puff programming last night as it aired a not-so-new, but definitely funny movie, The Ski Trip. The movie follows a group of NYC gay friends – minorities, mind you – as one friend in the group turns 30 and comes to terms with not having done much with is life. Without giving away any of the plot details, the movie has plenty of stereotypical and campy moments, but admittedly, it always makes you laugh. Most important, I could not only see myself in several of the characters, I wanted to be friends with most of them. Ultimately the movie finally shoots for the predictable ending, although my sentimental ass still had tears and a smile as the credits rolled. Logo, like many of the other sister cable channels, runs their movies several times in a month, so please be sure to stop by the new, open-minded station and catch this gem.

Outside of immediate family what person has had the greatest impact on my life? This is a great question tku for asking Coco, however, to say only 1 person had a major impact on my life is hard because who I am today is a composite and contribution of many great people I've met and came across in my life time.

The impacts have been both positive and negative but the negatives at the time (was my perception and what I had to go through to get to where I am today) turned into positives later on.

My extended family Janet & Loyda have been a tremendous impact especially when my mom died. It was great to have people who knew her as well as we did & to just have them present making the arrangements when we were frozen & shocked was a blessing. The support my family & I received from them as well as from my many friends was just inexplanable.

The lady I called my 2nd mother who was religious & I use to go to church w/her & that is really how I got more acquainted w/God & got to experience him Pentacostal church in the Bronx. I truly believe this foundation helped me connect and believe more in him and spirituality, the one, the universe.

Let's see so many more the new people I currently have in my life that I've met and are there to listen & give advise even if I don't take it but I do listen & they know that & allow me to be myself & go through whatever I need to go through.

I w/continue later but I can't just say one person because I've personally been blessed and am still blessed.

OH WAIT HOLD UP MY BIG GIRL MY DAUGHTER VIONETTE JOLI SHE IS A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION IN MY LIFE. SHE'S TEACHING ME UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, TO DEAL WITH THINGS AS THEY COME ESPECIALLY NOW THAT SHE'S A TEENAGER. TO CONTINUE GOING EVEN WHEN I WANT TO STOP. OKAY MY BIG GIRL YEAH, SHE HAS TRULY BEEN A MAJOR, POSITIVE, FULFILLING IMPACT IN MY LIFE AND OF COURSE VERY CHALLENGING.

This was a sort-of tough On Blast for me because like Krissy, I’ve had several folks who have had an enormous impact on my life. Since we’re not mentioning the sometimes obvious influence of immediate family, I’ll go right into my departure from home at 15 and the incredible group of youngsters who help take an upitty kid and turn him into a street smart man. Without them, I don’t think I would’ve survived the streets of NYC in the 80s. To amazing friends like Clent and Bobby who took me under their wing and showed me I would always be more attractive, intelligent and charming than they’d ever be – whew! What a confidence booster! Leona, who taught me the power of the word – no not the Bible folks – a man’s word. She taught me to stand behind what I say, don’t put anything in writing that I don’t want haunting me later and taught me to wield the weight of that necessary word – “NO” To John B. who loved me unconditionally and believed me and in me even when it meant crushing his own soul. JB taught me why it’s important that “I” always be the number one person in my life. To he who we do not speak his name…. thanks for teaching me the value of being a true and honest man. I can now whole-heartedly demand honesty because you taught me how pitiful a man is when he’s a fraud. To my soul wifey thanks for being the instructor on Charm101; Beauty101 and the reality that beauty and charm are so much more than skin deep and pretty is not a synonym of punk. Colleen aka Caspar…the embodiment of strength, determination, power….an unstoppable force that is fearless… your valor is contagious. To the wonderful folks I call my friends today. You guys are a consistent impact in my life. A life lesson, a shoulder an ear.

Completely irrelevant, but thanks for forwarding the following Freaking Rican...

You gotta love Robin Williams even if he's nuts! Leave it to Robin Williams to come up with the perfect plan. What we need now is for our UN Ambassador to stand up and repeat this message.

Robin Williams' plan (Hard to argue with this logic!)
"I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan for peace. So, here's one plan."

1) "The US will apologize to the world for our "interference" in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Noriega, Milosevic, Hussein, and the rest of those 'good ole boys', we will never "interfere" again.

2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany, South Korea, the Middle East, and the Philippines. They don't want us there. We would station troops at our borders. No one allowed sneaking through holes in the fence.

3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave. We' ll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or where they are. They're illegal!!! France will welcome them.

4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit!!!! No one from a terrorist nation will be allowed in. If you don't like it there, change it yourself and don't hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers.

5) No foreign "students" over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they don't attend classes, they get a "D" and it's back home baby.

6) The US will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy wise. This will include developing nonpolluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while.

7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don't like it, we go some place else. They can go somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of the wells filling up the storage sites would be enough.)

8) If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not "interfere. " They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides most of what we give them are stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if anything.

9) Ship the UN Headquarters to an isolated island some place. We don't need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, the building would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.

10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us "Ugly Americans" any longer. The Language we speak is ENGLISH...learn it...or LEAVE...Now, isn't that a winner of a plan?

"The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.' She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling, 'you want a piece of me?' "
