Morning Edition - 9/11/06

Five Years Ago Today
While sitting at work five years ago, I came across a breaking story on the Associated Press wire that said a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. I immediately tuned in to CNN and was watching in disbelief as another plane hit the other tower. Shortly thereafter, a plane plowed into the Pentagon. My employer ushered us out of the building and a few colleagues and I made our way, stunned, out of the city on foot. That day is permanently engraved in my memory, as I’m sure it is for those who shared that day with me. On that day 2,819 people died as a result of the attacks. Of those who died only 289 bodies were found intact. Today, like the majority of the dead, our collective memories are fragmented and forever changed. We will never be the people we were on September 10, 2001. Time flies and we are now five years away from that fateful event, but we should never forget those who died or how the strongest nation in the world was shaken into unity.
*As an aside, Mariah Carey released Glitter on September 11, 2001.

On Blast
What is your most vivid memory of 9/11?

Keep passin’ the open windows…

My most vidid memory was thinking that I had to get to my son. If we were all going to die (which at that time I thought we were), I had to die with him in my arms.

My most vivid memory from 9/11 was my travel home. It took me 7 hours to get from DC to Reston and it's only a twenty minute ride....Need I say more?

Tammy, Donya, Hector and I all piled into Donya's GrandAm(LMAO) and attempted to travel over to NE. We should have known it was going to be an adventure when we had to jump start the car in order to get it out of the parking garage...The car stopped three time, in traffic before we decided to abandon it on the side of the road. We then walked over to Tammy's baby daddy's MAma's house. From there, a friend of Tammy's drove us to MD, only after having an accident on the way to Hector's apt.

I'll leave some details to others....I was the last to get to my home after dropping everyone else off.....

Tammy, Hector, Donya.....Chime in, PLEASE....

It was a horrifying experience from jump street. I had just signed-on to my PC and began reading the critics as they trashed my girl Mariah’s new CD, Glitter. I vowed to run to the Borders Bookstore on the corner to purchase my copy during lunch – I’d show those a-holes! Next thing I know, an AP wire story popped across my screen showing the first tower of the World Trade Center with a gaping hole in it. I tuned-in to CNN and witnessed the second plane slamming in to the next tower. I was on the horn with my family and friends in NYC when the news came that the Pentagon had just been hit. Tam, who worked on the other side of the wall was finally in the office (the b*tch was usually late, but was on time this day) and Donya who worked on the 5th floor was busy when we had a quick conference call and decided to bail-out of the city, while we still could. When I hung-up with the girls, I dialed Robert’s extension and prayed his social-butterfly azz had remained planted to his desk this day. When he answered I told him we were all going to head out. We figured we’d go to my place where we’d get my car and I could drive everyone else home. When Robert, Tamara, Donya and I hit the streets of downtown NW DC, we realized it was pandemonium. Folks were being diverted away from the train and we found ourselves walking out of the city. We were stunned, frantic and giddy – yeah, I said giddy. I remember thinking – even then – that I would remember this day for the rest of my life. We walked for miles and as was recounted earlier, we watched an update on the news at Tam’s family’s house. Our trek was like traveling the Underground Railroad as friends of Tam and Donya helped us along the way as we made our way out of the city. When we thought we were finally going to have a ride the last couple of miles of the way, we boarded a small car belonging to Donya’s friend and were involved in an accident shortly thereafter. When Robert and I finally got to my apartment, I put on a pot of coffee and thought about the disaster the day had been. The news began showing the horrific chain of events that started that morning. Donya, Tam, Robert and I will forever remember that walk, that drive, that day….the day we had our escape from DC story… the day when we had the safety net removed.

The next morning I ran to the store to buy a copy of Glitter. I wanted the movie and the DVD. When I asked the store clerk about whether there were any copies left, he chuckled and pointed to the full rack of MiMi that had gone untouched.
Yeah… September 11th was indeed a tragedy….

My most vivid memory was looking out of my office window and seeing hundreds of people walking pass the Capitol window trying their best to get out of DC and me wondering how inna'hell am I going to get out to PG to get my children and to my momma. Cell phones weren't working and I couldn't get in touch with a loved one then lonliness set in.

Anyone else have any 9/11 confessions for me I may have glossed over...

Cas.. honey... they have footage of the jet liner that plowed through the Pentagon... there's no record of any bombs at the WTC.... you sure you came off those meds baby? Um...okay... well, we're going to have a moment of silence for your newly created tragedy in your head... and when we come back, we'll let Tupca and Elvis report on 9/11 memorial services being held at Graceland and in Brooklyn.... okie-dokie then...
