The Big Easy; The Huge Horror
New Orleans is said to be 80% underwater, with some parts 20 feet deep. Charity Hospital, the state’s largest public hospital, is having supplies canoed in from other locations; it has no power. At the superdome where over 10,000 folks have sought refuge – three suicides have been reported. The dome has no air conditioning, deplorable sanitary conditions and limited supplies, but it is presently the only place to bring in many of the rescued. Rescuers are comparing the conditions in New Orleans to that of a third world country.

What’s Good For The Goose; Is Not Good For The Other Goose
Matthew Limon is an 18-year old Kansas resident who is serving 17 years in prison for engaging in consensual oral sex with his 15-year old male high school friend. As it turns out, Kansas allows individuals as young as 12 to marry – with their parent’s consent of course – regardless of the age of the party their marrying. Most recently an out-of-state 22-year old man wed his 14-year old girlfriend. They crossed state lines to do so. The adult man had been having sex with the young girl since she was 13 – they even have a child to prove it. The state however is more concerned with the consensual interaction of two teenage boys that at best were exploring, as boys sometimes do, and at worst were having underage sex with a same sex partner. In any event, the state supreme court is reviewing Limon’s case. He has already served 5 years of his 17-year criminal sodomy sentence.

Feeling Tense Honey?

Yuk-Mouth Rapper Lil’ Kim, who is scheduled to begin her prison sentence in September, was reported to have had a verbal altercation with a flight attendant on her trip from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to NYC. Kim was heard asking the flight attendant, “Do you know who I am?!” several times and accused the sky waitress of being a racist. Ultimately, the flight took off and Kim had to trust her in-flight meal to the very person she harassed.

My train ride into work today was a disaster. I was transfixed as a major argument that pitted a black woman and a Puerto Rican woman in a battle of words that included: ‘go back to your country’; ‘you guys are dirty’; ‘speak English, this is America’ and countless other insults. Today, the question for our bloggers is simple. Do blacks and Latinos recognize that they are both minority groups who nearly always share the same financial situations, neighborhoods and struggles? Are the differences between the black and Latino cultures distinctive enough to bring about these confrontations? What negative stereotypes do these cultures have about each other that can be diffused with an open discussion?

Katrina Kills Hundreds
The governor of Mississippi estimated that the death toll in Harrison County alone could be as high as 80. Biloxi has already reported over 30 dead. Coast Guard operations have begun search and rescue attempts. The financial devastation is said to be over $9 billion. One man said he wrapped himself around a tree branch and waited four or five hours to be rescued.

Sharpton’s Hair Only Thing Relaxed
Yesterday Jarrett Maupin, 43, was driving Al Sharpton to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after Sharpton visited with anti-war activist, Cindy Sheehan just outside President Bush’s Crawford estate. Maupin is Sharpton’s regular driver. Authorities say that Maupin was driving 110 mph in a 65 mph zone and drove for over nine miles before adhering to police requests to pull over. Maupin was arrested and his rental car was impounded. Sharpton and his two riding partners were said to have hitched a ride and made their scheduled flight back to New York.

I want to know why individuals compare racial discrimination with discrimination against homosexuals. I want to know why performers like Kanye feel they are justified in making statements like the above on the hard work, blood, sweat and tears of civil rights leaders like Malcom and Martin. Discrimination is wrong no matter how you look at it, but to compare the right to interracial marriages to the right of same sex marriages is going OVERBOARD.I love my gay brothers and sisters, but I would like to be put On Blast with this one...
Can you really compare interracial marriages to same sex marriages...whats more, do you think Malcolm and Martin had the same thing in mind as Kanye?Enlighten me please....Would people have been beaten hosed and had dogs attack them if the rights they were marching for was the right to have sex with whom ever you choose? Good Intentions; See How It Feels
During an August 18 MTV interview Kanye West broached the subject of anti-gay remarks in hip-hop. Basically West stated that in light of the recent “coming-out” of a close cousin of his, he now understands the need to stop all negative remarks about gays in hip-hop lyrics. West, who is scheduled to drop his new CD, Late Registration tomorrow, faced some pretty crude comments from bloggers and detractors who even alleged West was gay. Bol Guevara, editor of hip-hop blog ByronCrawford.com said, “Kanye’s momma was one of these intellectual bitches who couldn’t keep a man around. You can tell his mom tried to dress him up like Alfonso Ribeiro from ‘Silver Spoons’ and had him doing all kinds of faggoty shit,” Guevara said. Another blog joked about hip-hop artists finally coming out of the closet and releasing a gay hip-hop compilation. The suggested play list was as follows:

Track 1: “Ain’t nothing wrong with doing it in the Butt”
Track 2: “Drop the Soap in the Shower”
Track 3: “Born this Way & Proud of It”
Track 4: “ Sodom & Gomorrah”
Track 5: “Mel the Funky Homosexual”
Track 6: “Stranded In Uranus”

Sidebar: Alright folks… I know it’s wrong to laugh at such things, but I did kee-kee at that last one!

Katrina Tearin’ Stuff Up
Hurricane Katrina had already caused substantial damage to Florida Thursday night before making a left turn and heading north straight toward New Orleans – a city 10 feet BELOW sea level. New Orleans uses levees, canals and pumps to keep dry year round. It’s surrounded by the Mississippi River on one end and Lake Pontchartrain on the other. The city hasn’t suffered any major devastation in over 40 years. There was a mandatory evacuation posted for New Orleans with 80% of all residents leaving town before Katrina made landfall this morning. Luckily the category four hurricane veered slightly to the right and the eye of the hurricane barely missed the swampy city. Winds are said to still be a pounding 145 miles per hour. In 1965 New Orleans suffered the last major hit from a hurricane – hurricane Betsy – a category 3 hurricane that killed 74 folks.

MTV VMAs Went Off With A Bang
Diddy, Sean Combs, Puffy or whatever he’s calling himself these days pulled off an exciting 2005 MTV Video Music Awards last night in Miami, Florida. The awards show producers had their fingers crossed after hurricane Katrina tore through Miami Thursday killing several people. On Saturday night Suge Knight of Death Row Records was shot in the leg while attending a star-studded party thrown by Kanye West. All said, the night could’ve been a bust, but Diddy, who had three wardrobe changes in the first 30 minutes of the show pulled it off with a plenty of ghetto fabulous class. The tribute to Biggie – including the meshing of classical music with hip-hop was a poignant part of the show. Mariah Carey performed from an off-site location while surrounded by Cabana boys singing her new hit Shake It Off. Now I’ll preface this statement with this… Mariah’s my girl… Now, that said, what the heck was the story with the stiff and lip sync-esque performance? She looked like someone was pulling strings on her puppet-looking-azz. Well, let me breathe…. I think I just spilled my coffee on my keyboard – twice! The VMAs are sure to run on MTV this week in super reruns, so be sure to catch the show if you missed it last night. Sidebar: Eva Langoria of desperate housewives – what the heck was that outfit all about?

Ignorance, Disrespect and Hate In the Name of Jesus
The Rev. Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas says American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. He took his message to the funeral of two soldiers this Saturday and chanted these remarks as families of the deceased mourned their loved ones. The two soldiers were not gay – then again, the message is that they were being killed for harboring and protecting gays – or so the pathetic reverend alleges. Local residents said the protest was disrespectful, ill-timed and hurtful. Sidebar: I’m curious, who agrees with Phelps stand?

The Lord Works In Mysterious Ways

The Rev. Jerry Falwell surprised many of his staunch conservative following when he announced he agreed that ALL Americans are entitled to equal rights; including equal housing and employment for gays and lesbians. He went on to say that he does not advocate special rights, but equal rights. This common-sense viewpoint comes as a surprise, since Falwell was even known for blaming the 9/11 attacks on retribution for Americans’ “pagan ways” and their homosexual constituency. The interview that sparked the controversial comments was aired on MSNBCs the Situation with Tucker Carlson.

He went on to work as a counselor at the Daytop Village – a drug treatment center. Now, Mieliwocki, 58, was indicted last week of child endangerment and criminal sexual conduct after fondling four boys, ranging in age from 16 to 18 years old at the treatment center. Do I Look Fat In These Pictures
Neil Goodwin of Salisbury Massachusetts was doing community service for a burglary conviction at the Old Hill Burying Ground on August 17. While there, Goodwin got the bright idea to dig-up a Civil War-era tomb and pose with the various skeleton parts. It's bizarre, absolutely bizarre," police Lt. Richard Siemasko said. "I can't even imagine what was in his head. This is just a whole new level of weird for me." Police were tipped-off by an anonymous caller who also sent copies of the alleged pictures. The bones were eventually found 15 feet from the tomb. Goodwin is charged with desecrating a corpse and breaking into a tomb – both are felonies. He is being held on $10,000 bail.

Let The MF Burn
When American Airlines Flight 77 plowed into the Pentagon on September 11 a lone flag flew over the smoldering wreckage of the illustrious building. That flag was allegedly purchased for $25,000 by John Andrews II off of EBay. Andrews had planned to fly the flag over the Newton-Lee Elementary School in Ashburn, Va. After questions were raised about the authenticity of the flag, Andrews decided to torch the flag yesterday and put an end to the idea. Two boy scouts helped Andrews cut the flag into four parts – the stars were also cut out of the nylon cloth. The flag was then tossed into a metal drum filled with oak logs and burned. Case closed.

Old Dog; Old Tricks
Louis Napoleon, 92, of Mount Lebanon, PA is charged with aggravated sexual assault and indecent assault after visiting his female friend at the Kane Regional Center in Scott Township. His friend, in her 60s, was examined by doctors who said she had injuries consistent with an attack. Napoleon, a retired doctor, says the charges are ludicrous and defamation of character. The incident was spotted by a nurse who says she walked-up on Napoleon and the alleged victim in the bathroom. When the nurse opened the door to see if Napoleon was helping the woman use the toilet, she realized Napoleon was assaulting the alleged victim. The victim is said to have advanced Alzheimer’s Disease.

Your Time Will Come
The exact time or cause of your death is unknown to you. Even when faced with a fatal diagnosis, you don’t know exactly when you’ll actually bite the bullet. For 13-year old Athitaya Onsuwan, who survived the December tsunami that ravaged her small seaside village in Thailand, that time was this morning. Onsuwan ran a mile up a mountainside before collapsing of exhaustion during the tsunami disaster that claimed the lives of 5,400 of her fellow villagers, but she could not hold-out for the heart transplant she needed to survive her deteriorating condition. "She told me, 'I can't hold on any longer,' and I told her, 'Try to hold out a little bit longer because you're going to get surgery in Bangkok soon,” her dad told reporters via telephone.

Volvo Wants Your Car To Check Your Breath
Ford Motor Company’s Swedish arm – Volvo, is testing a new breathalyzer seat belt mechanism that will test your alcohol level. To start the vehicle, the driver will need to buckle their seat belt and blow into the mechanism. As long as the driver’s alcohol content is below the legal .08 limit, the car will start. In addition, Volvo is also testing special keys that automatically tell the vehicle it cannot exceed a certain speed; perfect for families with younger drivers. Volvo says that these programs are only in a testing stage and are not close to being installed in production vehicles.

Not Fairing Well, Thanks To Welfare
Between November 2001 and March 2003 the mother of Michael Jackson’s last accuser collected close to $19,000 in welfare aid. Now she faces four felony counts of perjury by false application for aid and one count of aid by misrepresentation. She is scheduled to turn herself in on September 7 and prosecutors are recommending a $50,000 bail. If found guilty, she may serve up to 11 years in prison. The woman declined to answer questions regarding aid during Jackson’s trial exercising her Fifth Amendment right not to self incriminate. In an effort to keep the identity of the accuser private, the mother’s identity was not made available to the press.

In the Name of Jesus?
When you’re a conservative Christian broadcaster who has attacked everyone from gays to teletubbies – all in the name of Jesus, of course – it stands to reason that suggesting murder as a solution wouldn’t really fit the Christian way. Monday night, Pat Robertson did just that. During his 700 Club broadcast, Robertson suggested we send undercover operatives to murder Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Robertson said, "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war. And I don't think any oil shipments will stop." Venezuela is the largest oil producing country outside of the Middle East. "Mr. Robertson has been one of the president's staunchest allies," said Bernardo Álvarez, the Venezuelan ambassador to the United States. "His statement demands the strongest condemnation by the White House." Robertson and other religious leaders frequently cross the line between political stands and God’s word. Ultimately, their credibility as men of God suffers.

Looks Like I’ve Got Company
Just 21 months after returning to NYC I’ve managed to go from 118 lbs. to 165 lbs. and increase my waist size by over 8 inches to a whopping 33 inches. Admittedly I’ve drastically changed my eating habits and have all but stopped working out completely. Now, a new gym membership in hand and a determination to NOT become a waif again, but to transform into a healthier and leaner man, I will begin my quest to transform again – well, starting Saturday that is. I’m not alone in my plight against the bulge. A public health advocacy group has now released a study that shows the obesity rate for adult Americans is nearly 25 percent. That means ¼ of all Americans are fat. The study also found that Mississippi was the nation’s fattest state while Colorado was the thinnest. Hawaii was never ranked, but the southeastern US was found to amass the heaviest states of the bunch. Back in 1985 there was not a single state with an obesity rate over 20 percent, today more than 40 states have over 20 percent of the population ranked as obese. The study was paid in part by the Dr. Robert Atkins Foundation. Atkins, as you may know, was the creator of the low-carb Atkins diet.

A Rude Awakening
The message on the prescription hand-out is clear, “This medication is addictive and should not be taken for more than seven days as it can create dependency.” Well, maybe that’s what the print-out I get with my sleep medication says. Unfortunately some folks disregard the warning and use them daily to find that comfy sleep without the tossing and turning. Such is the case with Eminem, a.k.a. Matthew Mathers, who is now undergoing treatment for dependency to sleep medication – uh, the boy is in REHAB. The rapper concluded the US leg of his Anger Management tour and suddenly announced he was canceling 10 European concerts – the first to be held in Hamburg, Germany. Last week, the rapper released a statement that the Euro-arm of the tour was being cancelled due to exhaustion, but it’s now clear what the “exhaustion” is due to.

Keep the Coo-Coo Quiet
The Priatti family of Walkill, NY had no idea that they’d be living down the name of the movie they were watching, but that’s precisely what happened when managers at the local Loews Theater asked the Priattis to “march” their 7-year old son out of the theater for laughing too loudly. Anthony Priatti suffers from autism and this was the wheelchair-bound boy’s third movie. Management at Loews said the family could stay, but the boy had to go. The angered father asked the manager if he expected him to leave the disabled youngster outside by himself. "We may not have exercised the best sensitivity in handling this situation," said John McCauley, senior vice president of marketing for Loews Cineplex Entertainment. Ironically, the family was watching March of the Penguins.

Hurricane Really A Warm Breeze
Eric Benet has never really hit it big with any of his recordings. Whether he was remaking Georgy Porgy or simply trying to woo us with a ballad sung from behind his once sexy locks, the crooner never really caught on. His new endeavor, Hurricane, is a different story. Maybe his, now defunct, relationship with the shockingly beautiful Halle Berry gave him some ideas on how to really lay a soft love song on or the time in therapy for sex addiction taught him a little something about how to say things, but Benet is oozing love, acceptance, growth and sex appeal on this new release. Admittedly I’m undergoing a sentimental time in my life, but the CD made me smile, tear-up and sigh from start to finish. Need some direction on where to go when you first pop-in this gem – head straight for song 9, The Last Time – the lyrics are beautiful and touching in their simplicity. Song 14, Still With You, will keep you jogging your thoughts – mine got a Charlie horse – go figure. This isn’t a CD that will blow you away with resounding vocals, but Benet’s ability to convey a sense of renewal and a calming breeze into maturity will make it a fast favorite in your shuffle rankings.

Langley Park, MD aka Slasherville?
Five block span; five folks slashed. That is the story coming from Langley Park, MD. A mainly Latino community – 64% - that has seen its share of increased crime and poor community services. The immigrant population is packed into this one square mile town and the recent blood bath has scared them to action. To date, two men have been killed in the slash attacks, four throats were cut and one man’s hand was virtually severed off. Close to two years ago, I lived in Mt. So Close; Yet So Far
Approximately 90 Dominican migrants have drowned this year, making the trek across the dangerous Mona Passage from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico. Just before dawn this morning 116 Dominicans were seized just two miles off the coast of Puerto Rico as they traversed the passage in a 32 foot wooden motorboat – a yola. U.S. Coast Guards say they will be processed and returned to the Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, enjoys financial help from the U.S. and Puerto Ricans are born U.S. citizens. Last year 110 Dominicans died making the journey to freedom from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico.

Mr. Jackson If He's Nasty

He has undergone two trials and was convicted. His sentencing is set for tomorrow, where he can be charged with 33 years for the crime. During his second trial Jackson’s sanity was brought into question when he stood up, screamed “cuckoo” and proceeded to drop his pants and moon the jury. He was ruled competent to stand trial and now may be doing quite a bit of mooning in years to come.

Straight-Up Frauds
Bryan Pinn and Bill Dalrymple, both divorced and self-proclaimed straight men, had planned to marry after Canadian law made same sex marriages legal. Their motive was simple – tax breaks for married couples. The two have been friends for 22 years. They say that after their announcement to marry, many gay couples criticized their decision. The straight two-some say Canada did not specify that same sex couples needed to be gay to marry. The two have cancelled their plans to marry and said they were just making a point of the implications the new all-inclusive law has for Canadians.

I Was Blind; Now I See
Recently I forwarded a playing card brain teaser to each of you. The teaser involved a group of six cards. The object was to focus on one card, scroll down the page and find the group of six cards minus the card you have previously chosen. I’ll admit that I was baffled how my card remarkably was missing from the bottom bunch each time. I initially chalked the brain teaser up to an act of Satan worship; someone was certainly swinging a chicken somewhere. As it turns out – and Monica J. was the first to send me an e-mail spilling the beans – the original group of six cards and the subsequent group of five cards are completely different – minus the suit and colors. Therefore, your chosen card would never be in the group, since the second group is a new group altogether. Thanks MJ for figuring that one out for us.

The producers of American Idol and the Fox Network have issued a stern warning to all American Idol staff – No fraternizing with contestants – PERIOD! The warning and new policy was issued following an extensive inquiry to determine the extent of interaction between Paula Abdul and former contestant Corey Clark. Abdul will resume her duties on the new Idol set to begin in the coming days.

Toilet Paper Roll Test
Researchers say that only six percent of the male population has larger than average penises. An average penis is approximately six inches fully erect. Many men joke that they need large-size condoms, but condom makers say this is a myth and an exaggeration. They say the easiest way to tell if you (or your man) need a large size condom is to simply place an empty toilet paper roll over an erect penis. If the toilet paper roll can slide to the base of the member, you don’t need a large size condom. If you (or your man) cannot comfortably slide the toilet paper roll to the base of the erect penis, head for the drug store and proudly request the larger size condoms. Statistics have shown that both women and gay men will prefer an average size penis if that member is attached to a decent, kind-hearted man, but there has always been a fascination with a large cock. Doctors say that most men – even those with fairly large penises feel their member can be larger. Regardless of their size, men are aware that there is always a larger penis than their own looming near.

On Blast
Be honest. Don’t be shy. Does penis size matter? Is there a need for a larger than average size penis for a fulfilling sex life? Gender Matters
In January, Pamela Rogers Turner, 28, was indicted for sexual battery and statutory rape when she slept with a 13-year old boy while a resident at his home. Turner was a certified teacher at the time and a married woman. The mother of the teen says that Turner is a family friend and she hoped there would not be a trial. Turner pleaded no contest and will serve nine months in jail with eight years suspended on probation. Turner’s husband filed for divorce when she was indicted in January. I’m curious as to what the charges and consequences would had been had the gender of the perpetrator and victim been reversed.

H.S. folks resurfacing; is it a sign? Strange calls in the night; bumped your head? J’Moo on vacation in Canada; getting married? Nah! Philippe in Chi-Town; art in the windy city. Men at work; some folks just insist on pooping where they eat; BTW: You ain’t slick and hint: Like the namesake, we don’t wanna know. Krissy taking steps to achieving the be-your-own-boss situation; keep on truckin’ Boo. Caspar to move to larger apartment; Co-op queen does it again.

On Blast
You have a friend who continually makes the same f’ing mistakes over and over again. You refuse to give advice and feel it’s pointless to even talk about some of the recurring issues. The light bulb in your head tells you that you have grown and your friend – well, they’re just spinning their wheels in 1987. Should you simply discontinue this friendship or hang in there in the hopes that one day your friend will get with the program? Is creating distance in the relationship an option or do we run the danger of being sucked in?

Afternoon Edition - 8/10/05

You Play; You Pay
They only know his last name, but the details of how he came to suffer a fatal heart attack are clear – internet games! A 28-year old South Korean man died after spending 49 hours playing Starcraft – an internet video game. Doctors say the man suffered a heart attack and died shortly after. While at the café he ate minimally and barely slept. Police also allege the man had been fired for missing work to play video games.

Not A Gold Digger
Eight men are being sought in connection with the biggest bank robbery in Brazil’s history - $65 million dollars. The crime took some planning; three months of planning to be exact. The men dug a hole 13 feet below the vault floor and crawled through with only 28 inches between the floor and ceiling of the hole. They are still on the loose.

On Blast
Today’s On Blast question is simple… Is the old Luther default-lover theory of “If you can’t be with the one you love, then love the one you’re with,” true? Is it good advice to tell folks to be with someone because they’re good for them, even if there are no genuine feelings there? Which brings up a more serious issue; can you be with someone in the hopes of falling in love with them because you believe they are good to you and good for you? Tell of any experiences you've had that support your theory.

A Do-It-Yourself Kind-Of Girl
Some things are better left to professionals; especially when they involve piercing. Unfortunately, Deborah Robinson’s 13-year old daughter didn’t think so. She attempted to pierce her belly-button and managed to cause such damage that she lay virtually dead at her home’s living room for nearly four weeks before good ‘ole Deb decided to call paramedics to come to her aid. The 13-year old wasted to 75 pounds and was found wearing a diaper. The teen was suffering from sepsis – a painful bloodstream infection – and had no detectable blood pressure. Robinson is charged with wantonly and recklessly permitting substantial bodily injury to a child under 14 – a felony. The teen remains in critical condition. Robinson’s attorney is trying to poke holes in the state’s case.

Coons Moving To A City Near You
Chicago and other major Illinois cities and villages are seeing more and more raccoons join populated areas to survive an ongoing Midwest drought. The drought has killed the buds of wild fruit tress and brought the raccoons searching for food. Pet food, sprinklers and discarded fast food trash has become a regular fare for the giant rodents. Only a fraction of the raccoons are relocated, the majority are killed. Sidebar: Would it still rub the PETA folks the wrong way if I were to have a coat made of raccoons killed during these raids?

Meet Me In Florida; No Make That California
The space shuttle Discovery landed at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert at 8:11 a.m. EDT. It was initially scheduled to land in Cape Canaveral, Florida, but lightning and thunderstorms had NASA divert the shuttle to California. This is the last US space flight until research is done to explain why foam pieces become dislodged during takeoff. Discovery spent 14 days in space – 2 days longer than anticipated, due to inclement weather and last minute checks. During their journey, Discovery orbited Earth 219 times and traveled 5.8 million miles.

Morning Edition - 8/9/05

Call it rushing to catch-up with my life from my extended birthday weekend OR just a really interesting read, but Lady Long Legs forwarded a Washington Post article I felt needed to be shared with my girls... yeah, my guys too. Following is the article. Please read and use our Comments section to give us your opinion. We're curious to hear your take on it. Looks like we've got our Morning Edition and On Blast in one shot today! Thanks LLL.

Are Black Women Scaring Off Their Men? (A Fighting Spirit Is Important, But Not At Home)
The Washington Post By: Joy Jones

Have you met this woman? She has a good job, works hard, and earns a good salary. She went to college, she got her master's degree; she is intelligent. She is personable, articulate, well read, interested in everybody and everything. Yet, she's single. Or maybe you know this one...

Active in the church, faithful, committed, sings in the choir, serves on the usher board, and attends every committee meeting. Loves the Lord and knows the Word. You'd think that with her command of the Scriptures and the respect of her church members, she'd have a marriage as solid as a rock, but again, no husband. Or perhaps you recognize the community activist. She's a black lady, or, as she prefers, an African American woman, on the move. She sports a short natural; sometimes cornrow braids, or even dreadlocks. She's an organizer, a motivator, a dynamo. Her work for her people speaks for itself; organizing women for a self-help, raising funds for a community cause, or educating others around a new issue in South Africa. Black folks look up to her, and white folks know she's a force to be reckoned with. Yet once again, the men leave her alone.

What do these women have in common? They have so much; what is it they lack? Why is it they may be able to hook a man but can't hold him? The women puzzle over this quandary themselves. They gather at professional clubs, at sorority meetings or over coffee at the office and wonder...What's wrong with black men? They hold special prayer vigils and fast and pray and beg Jesus to send the men back to church. They find the brothers attending political strategizing sessions or participating in protests, but when it comes time to go home, the brothers go home to someone else.

I know these women because I am all of these women. And after asking over and over again, "What's wrong with these men?" it finally dawned on me to ask the question... "What's wrong with us women?" What I have found, and what many of these women have yet to discover, is that the skills that make one successful in the church, community or workplace are not the skills that make one successful in a relationship. Linear thinking, self-reliance, structured goals and direct action assist one in getting assignments done, in organizing church or club activities or in positioning oneself for a raise, but relationship-building requires different skills. It requires making decisions that not only gratify you, but satisfy others. It means doing things that will keep the peace rather than achieve the goal, and sometimes it means creating the peace in the first place. Maintaining a harmonious relationship will not always allow you to take the straight line between two points. You may have to stoop to conquer or yield to win.

In too many cases, when dealing with men, you will have to sacrifice being right in order to enjoy being loved. Being acknowledged as the head of the household is an especially important thing for many black men, since their manhood is so often actively challenged everywhere else. Many modern women are so independent, so self-sufficient, so committed to the cause, to the church, to career or their narrow concepts that their entire personalities project an "I don't need a man" message. So they end up without one! An interested man may be attracted but he soon discovers that this sister makes very little space for him in her life.

Going to graduate school is a good goal and an option that previous generations of blacks have not had. But sometimes the achieving woman will place her boyfriend so low on her list of priorities that his interest wanes. Between work, school, and homework, she's seldom "there" for him, for the preliminaries that might develop a commitment to a woman. She's too busy to prepare him a home-cooked meal or to be a listening ear for his concerns because she is so occupied with her own. Soon he uses her only for uncommitted sex since to him she appears unavailable for anything else. Blind to the part she's playing in the problem, she ends up thinking, "Men only want one thing." And she decides she's better off with the degree than the friendship. When she's 45, she may wish she'd set different priorities while she was younger. It's not just the busy career girl who can't see the forest for the trees.

A couple I know were having marital troubles. During one argument, the husband confronted the wife and asked what she thought they should do about the marriage, what direction they should take. She reached for her Bible and turned to Ephesians. "I know what Paul says and I know what Jesus says about marriage," he told her, "What do you say about our marriage?"

Dumbfounded, she could not say anything. Like so many of us, she could recite the Scriptures but could not apply them to everyday living. Before the year was out, the husband had filed for divorce. Women who focus on civil rights or community activism have vigorous, fighting spirits and are prepared to do whatever, whenever, to benefit black people. That's good. That's necessary. But it needs to be kept in perspective. It's too easy to save the world and lose your man.

A fighting spirit is important on the battlefield, but a gentler spirit is wanted on the home front. Too many women are winning the battle and losing the home. Sometimes in our determined efforts to be strong believers and hard workers, we contemporary women downplay, denigrate, or simply forget our more traditional feminine attributes. Men value women best for the ways we are different from them-not the ways we are the same.

Men appreciate us for our grace and beauty. Men enjoy our softness and see it as a way to be in touch with their tender side, a side they dare not show to other men. A hard-working woman is good to have on your committee. But when a man goes home, he'd prefer a loving partner to a hard worker. It's not an easy transition for the modern black woman to make. It sounds submissive, reactionary, outmoded, and oppressive. We have fought so hard for so many things, and rightfully so. We have known so many men who were shaky, jive, and untrustworthy. Yet we must admit that we are shaky, jive, and willful in our own ways. Not having a husband allows us to do whatever we want, when, and how we want to do it. Having one means we have to share the power and certain points will have to be surrendered. We are terrified of marriage and commitment, yet dread the prospect of being single and alone.

Throwing ourselves into work seems to fill the void without posing a threat. But like any other drug, the escape eventually becomes the cage. To make the break, we need to do less and "be" more. I am learning to "be still and know," to be trusting. I am learning to stop competing with black men and to collaborate with them, to temper my assertive and aggressive energy with softness and serenity. I'm not preaching a philosophy of "women be seen and not heard." But I have come to realize that I, and many of my smart and independent sisters, am out of touch with our feminine center and therefore out of touch with our men.

About a year ago, I was at an oldies-but-goodies club. As a Washingtonian, I love to do the bop and to hand dance styles that were popular when I was a teen. In those dances, the man has his set of steps and the woman has hers, but the couple is still two partners and must move together. On this evening, I was sitting out a record when a thought came to me...

If a man were to say, "I'm going to be in charge and you're going to follow. I want you to adjust your ways to fit in with mine," I'd dismiss him as a Neanderthal. With my hand on my hip, I'd tell him that I have just as much sense as he does and that he can't tell me what to do! Yet, on the dance floor, I love following a man's lead. I don't feel inferior because my part is different from his, and I don't feel I have to prove that I'm just as able to lead as he is. I simply allow him to take my hand, and
I go with the flow.

I am still single. I am over 30 and scared. I am still a member of my church, have no plans to quit my good government job, and will continue to do what I can for my people. I think that I have a healthy relationship with a good man. But today, I know that I have to bring some of that spirit of the dance into my relationship. Dancing solo, I've mastered that. Now I'm learning how to accept his lead, and to go with the flow.

Gay or Slick?
Jimi Hendrix, legendary rock guitarist, was discharged from the US Army in 1962 for “homosexual tendencies.” According to Room Full Of Mirrors a new biography by Charles R. Cross, Cross was able to unearth Hendrix’ medical records to reveal that his conversations with a military shrink in Kentucky mentioned he was in love with one of his squad mates and couldn’t stop masturbating. Hendrix was known for being a womanizer and there is no evidence to show he ever had a homosexual experience.

Watch This; You Kill Me
Lee Morgan got engaged to Sherrie Smith on Christmas Day. Unfortunately, Morgan was so distraught and disheveled by New Year’s Eve that he argued with his girlfriend, left a party and then beamed streaming film via telephone of his suicide jump from Humber Bridge in London. "I could see the lights. It went black and the phone cut out,” Smith said. Ironically, Smith said she told Morgan to calm down and telephone her in the morning when he announced he was leaving the party. Unfortunately, Morgan called one hour later with the disturbing footage.

Berry, Berry Bad Weather
The Michigan Blueberry Growers Association said blueberries and other berries were suffering due to the high temperatures and sweltering humidity. "Anytime the temperatures get above 85 and 90 degrees, and you have humidity and lack of rain, then the plants suffer," said Ray Tejchma, owner of T-Berry Farms Inc. in Ottawa County’s Grand Haven Township.

Life In Review
Back in January 1969, Johnny and Millie Cruz were given the news that Millie’s Christmastime partying had paid off and that she was expecting her second child. Nine months later, on August 5, Millie was rushed to Polyclinic Hospital in Manhattan where she would spend over 13 hours in labor. When they brought the little cocoa-skinned tyke to her bedside, Millie looked up from her drug induced exhaustion to say the child would be named Hector – a name she had long dreamed of since her childhood; well, that and Nestor, so I guess the Lord prevented a future suicide or name change. Johnny, feeling slightly left out that his first male child would not be named after him insisted little Hector would need to carry some part of his name. Millie gave it a quick thought and reasoned they would use Manuel, since Johnny’s first name is actually Juan and it would be at war with the chosen first name. …and so it went that Hector Manuel was more than a handful for the Cruz family. Unlike his sweet and beautiful older sister, Hector was colic, hyperactive and unusually destructive at a young age. By nine months, Hector could recite the alphabet, sing and make wonderful artwork with the contents of his diapers. Several of Millie’s 15 sisters rushed to NYC to help Millie care for Hector and prevent her from committing one of those God-forsaken tragedies that young mothers who are beyond frustration can pull-off. By age 3, Hector was getting drunk at family gatherings. He would wait for the remaining few ounces of a drink to be left behind and he would immediately swallow them down. At the tender age of 5, Hector was shipped off to live with his grandparents. A year or so later, Millie decided that it was too dangerous for Hector to live with his grandparents. He had a knack for torturing them – once even tying his grandmother to a chair for over 3 hours until his grandfather returned to find the flustered nana struggling under the tight phone cords. The years passed quickly and by age 15 Hector left home to conquer the world – or he was put out for admitting to being gay…. Hmmm, the story sounds much more positive if we say he willfully left to experience life. At any rate, Hector worked to get through high school and was blessed to come across many friends – some who he still calls his family today. With incredible obstacles to overcome, Hector survived to celebrate his 36th birthday today. His personality is a product of the many loving and caring people who bless his life daily. He is a reflection of all that is his life and a creation of everything that has touched him. Hector remains a study in contrasts. Assertive, creative, loving, supportive, selfish, boisterous and yes, even brash. He is proof that time marches on and sometimes it even marches right across your face.

Fingers Crossed; Bags Packed
The space shuttle Discovery, the first shuttle to go back to space after the Columbia disaster two years ago, is preparing to return home before dawn on Monday. Today, astronauts began placing a large disposal container from the International Space Station into the payload bay of the shuttle – the equivalent of the shuttle’s trunk. NASA says that although several thermal tiles have come off Discovery, no repairs were necessary before their reentry to Earth. Some fear the same fatal issues that befell Columbia could affect Discovery.

The Rings
Terrorism is at the forefront of everyone’s mind – especially when it involves airplanes. Both NYC and DC suffered tragic losses on September 11 and since then, most folks get an eerie feeling in the pit of their stomach when they see a low-flying aircraft or hear the roaring engines of a fighter jet overhead. Now the US government has come up with an idea. They will set an inner- and outer-ring perimeter around the DC area where planes would be prohibited from flying. They feel this would safeguard the DC area. The ring would cover east, beyond Baltimore; west, beyond Dulles in Virginia; north, beyond Gaithersburg; and about 30 miles south of DC. Anyone who willingly flies into this area would suffer stiff fines – up to $100,000; a year in prison and the loss of their pilot’s license for up to one year. The government proposal will be up for comment for the next 90 days. Sidebar: What’s the story with NYC? Did we not suffer more losses on 9/11? Where is our government-imposed flight restriction plan?

Just Me and Mariah
Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems is predicting Mariah Carey’s We Belong Together as this summer’s biggest hit. With 195,535 radio plays since Memorial Day, Carey has beat out her closest competitor, Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl by more than 80,000 plays. As a HUGE Carey fan and entranced listener of Carey’s new Emancipation of MiMi, I can attest that this album release is one of Carey’s best ever. Song number 4 on MiMi, Mine Again, has been on repeat on my CD player for the past week! If you don’t have this CD in your repertoire as yet, hit the music stores now and get with the program.

You Should’ve Gone For It

DL Hughley, formerly of ABCs The Hughleys, has a new Comedy Central show for the next 13 weeks – Weekends At the DL. No pun intended, but wouldn’t Weekend On The DL suit the show better? I mean, I know the recent negative connotations the DL (down low) may have and a black man hosting the show would’ve added credence to it, but the truth is, it probably would’ve suited the show better. I’m not saying this because I have the scoop on Hughley. The show is just plain horrible. Poorly scripted, poorly acted and Hughley seemed so uncomfortable in his role as host that I cringed several times during his attempt to interview pretty interesting guests. His first show included Chris Rock and Regina King – both of whom seemed to want to run off the show. All said, if you’re watching this show we sure hope you’ll just keep it on the DL…. it’s not worth telling anyone about it.

Lost In Translation
Last night I ordered new plates for my vehicle. Yes, I figured it was time to personalize things and make the ‘ole Boricuamobile say something more than, “I’m a frugal bitch with shallow pockets.” So I got online and played with several different options: UWANTME; KISSIT; NYRICAN; unfortunately, my inner freak won out. My new plate…drum roll please – “KUM4ME” Don’t say it. I initially chose this plate because we have a saying… well, in the gay community. “Come for me,” simply means let’s see what you’ve got and I’ll set you straight. A challenge of sorts. What I came to find out – after my order had been confirmed, of course – is that straight people see it as a crass and overt request to do me a “favor” of sorts. Well, I’m not changing it. Call it my birthday gift to myself or my new found defiance for the “norm.” So just honk your horn when I KUM by. I’ll be sure to honk back!

It’s Your Party; Cry If You Want To
Crystal Rodriguez, 15, never dreamed her quinceanera party (sweet 15) held mainly in Latin American countries, would necessitate police with tasers, batons and pepper spray to disperse her 300-some-odd guests. Palm Beach County, Florida police say a drink that was spilled on the dance floor caused a fight that engulfed the party. Rodriguez says her guests were already leaving when the police arrived and the incident is being reviewed by the police department. In the end officers were forced to use crowd control devices – including pepper spray to calm and disperse the crowd. Ultimately, nine people were arrested. Rodriguez says several party-goers had to calm her down and it took her hours to stop crying.

First Parent; Second Parent
Massachusetts has instructed hospitals to cross out the word “father” on birth certificates for children born to same sex parents and substitute “second parent.” Municipal clerks are saying that this will open a can of worms for passport, drivers license and other agencies who will view these as altered documents. Massachusetts has been asked to formerly revise their birth certificates and the issue if on the table with Public Health Officials.

Come Out of The Dark; Get It Straight
Exodus International,
http://www.exodus-international.org/, says it can help homosexuals change from gay to straight – just like that. Since 1976, Exodus has been holding conferences, rallies, etc. to recruit homosexuals who are ready to leave their same-sex loving ways and join the ranks of the happy and normal majority. Hmmm… yes, I’m not only being sarcastic, I’m floored and skeptical. They presently operate in 17 countries. To quote from their mission statement, “Within both the Christian and secular communities, Exodus has challenged those who respond to homosexuals with ignorance and fear, and those who uphold homosexuality as a valid orientation. These extremes fail to convey the fullness of redemption found in Jesus Christ, a gift which is available to all who commit their life and their sexuality to Him.” Uh, here’s the thing, this group and their theories have never been proven. Sidebar: If I don’t get “changed” do I get my money back on the conference and expenses? Also, if I meet my future life partner at one of your conferences, can we post our success story on their website?

The “Morning-After” pill has been dubbed the catch-all pill, since it prevents egg fertilization. It’s great for women who toss away the thought of protection and swear away a real means of birth control. Now Governor Pataki of New York is vowing to veto a bill that would allow women in New York to purchase the pill over the counter and without a prescription. His office says he would be more apt to approve the bill if it included legislation to prevent minors from purchasing it. Pataki is eyeing the 2008 presidential race and is, in all likelihood, attempting to court the conservative right.
