Morning Edition - 7/19/07

Everything Happens In Its Right Time
On the very street where BD and I strolled just 24 hours before, a huge steam explosion tore a hole that would’ve swallowed us alive. The very sight of it made me cringe, realizing that had we chosen to have dinner last night, rather than the night before, it would all be over. When the blast occurred I called BD and immediately let out a sigh of relief as we both yelled, “Are you okay?!” Coincidentally, I left the office just an hour before the blast that tore a huge hole in the Grand Central neighborhood last night, to AGAIN wait for my dresser handles (they never arrived, but that’s another post all together). As the night went on, I marveled at the chain of events that transpired right outside my office windows. First, had my dresser been delivered complete, I probably would’ve worked until the time of the explosion and would probably be strolling up that very street to catch the train. It wasn’t meant to be – the delivery or my involvement in the incident. I thanked God for doing things in his time, his way and all for a reason. It made me question the many times I lose my cool at things not going exactly as I plan. As I watched the billowing steam and debris I had to admit that everything happens in its right time. Am I going to light fire under the furniture company’s ass for not delivering last night? You betcha! …but somehow, the fire and brimstone that I would’ve sent them to will be less hot since I know in my inner recesses that had they been there when I wanted them there (or when I thought they should have been there) I would not be here to tell this story. Sadly, one person was killed in the incident.

Busta; The Update
Busta is up and moving as though the issue with his spine never happened. It’s a miracle of sorts, since just two weeks ago he was barely able to stand. He has an appointment with his hairdresser this Saturday and will be getting all spruced up in preparation for his grandparent’s visit next week. I guess my boy has a few good years left in him. Thank you all for the well-wishes or as Busta would say….”Rank-roo”

On Blast
I told BD that I was surprised at how much I panicked when I saw the explosion that took a bite out of the Apple last night. It felt like one of those scenes from a movie… everything is perfect with the main character and his love interest and BAM!, the love interest is wiped out. He said, “Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.” We nervously laughed at the prospect.
Have you averted a harrowing scene or catastrophic situation because you failed to be somewhere you normally would be?

Keep passin’ the open windows…

I'm still a New Yorker at heart and I was a little distressed about that steam pipe. Glad to hear you are OK and happy about the baby dog.

I will... at the end of the day if 9/11 had not happened it would have a been on page G-8 under worker dies in steam pipe accident... The media just wanted something to report and that was something blowing up in NY. As a dog owner and SOOO happy for BUSTA

Kennon, I don’t know where your little country nest is, but the reason every major news outlet made this a HUGE story is because it was (is). Not only were dozens of folks injured and one killed, but it has crippled the inner city subway system and left a gaping hole in a city block – one that engulfed a car. We New Yorkers are resilient and deal with much. I assure you this was BIG. It may be hard to gauge and may have been underreported in your little town – and any town outside of the largest, most crowded city in the world is a little town – but it IS big. You may want to go ahead a read up a bit on it first before minimizing it.

Ummmmm I left London a week before the explosions on the underground happened. I would've been right at the station the most devastating explosion happened waiting fort he train, on my way to Shakespeare class....it was kinda scary...

I agree with Cocoa on this one, this was a reminder of "911" to everyone. I was in the shower at the NYSC gym in Grand Central when all of this began to unfolded. I must say it has been one of the scariest things I have ever lived thru thus far, imagine being rushed out of the shower with soap all over the body, everyone trying to get dressed and gather their belongings. One women was panic stricken and could not get her locker open but there wasn't anyone in the to open it for her since everyone had already evacuated the gym. Then having to exit a bldg and all you see when on the street is people running, pushing screaming, covered in what looked like mud, some bleeding, all I could see was alot of smoke coming from between the bldgs, it was total pandemonium and above all not one person could tell me what the hell had just happened, it was horrifing.....thank god I am fine.

...that last little comment said it best... especially because it is true...
THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND NYC. WE ARE THE EPICENTER OF BUSINESS, FASHION AND ENTERTAINMENT. Get into y'all.
Now be sure and let us know if a watermelon truck overturns down on your end and I'll show some sympathy. LOL :)

Yesterday was scary. After 9-11 I trust no one. There really is a million stories in this city.

Kennon
Are you kidding me? Did you watch the news? Wait, you live in da country right? Riiiiiiggghhhtt!

Yes, Kennon, the WORLD does revolve around NYC. ATL tries - I repeat TRIES - to compare but it ain't going to happen.

SO the next time you attempt to minimize a person dying and twenty six people being burned and scalded and a blast of steam reaching the top of the Chrysler building (do you know what the Chrysler building is boo?) I suggest you go to cnn.com and find out what really happened.

And yes, our nerves are shot to hell from 9/11. Trust me, the terrorists will leave ATL alone because NOTHING goes on in ATL that isn't borrowed from THE GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD.

And Kennon....
I've seen my fair share of BLACK women overreacting as much as WHITE women, so please stop with the racial stereotyping to describe Cocoa's reaction to a tragic event...

maybe if he got that basketball out of his azz he would think before speaking/typing?

the driver of the tow truck that was sucked into the whole was only 23 years old and was severely BURNED over 80 percent of his young body. Being burned by steam is worse than fire. look it up.
Pray for the dead and the injured.
And then there's the asbestos in the air that we"ll be breathing in....
Yeah, we're overreacting y'all!

First off, I am happy for Busta. Second, I am REALLY happy that you guys were not hurt. It is amazing when you see just how different life would be if we made alternate decisions.

I cannot think of anything off of the top of my head but when I was 16, we moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma for 6 months (it was too humid so we moved back to California). My father had an appointment at the Federal Building in Oklahoma City the morning of the big bombing. I was in school when the explosion occured (there were television sets in the hallways so we saw the news coverage). I broke down and had to go to my counselor. I called home and found out that my father woke up late and cancelled his appointment prior to the explosion. I had never been so thankful/relieved in my life! It opened my eyes to the fact that you have to enjoy it (life) while you have it!
