Morning Edition - 9/17/07

On Blast
There are countless singers – talented, soulful, triple-threats. We have our favorites, but there’s that one singer that touches your soul. For me, that singer has always been Jennifer Holliday. I remember the first time I saw her perform. She sang I Am Love. The song pulled at my heartstrings.

Can you remember the first song you heard your favorite singer sing?

Keep passin’ the open windows…

damn, it's impossible for me to name my all time favorite singer or song. there's just too many Stephanie Mills, Faith Evans, Billie Holiday, Mary J. Blige, Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, Big Mama Thornton, Johnny Taylor, this list goes on.

i will say this though: Jennifer SANG that song!

She's a little before my time. I was around for her hits in the early 80s, but was focused on nursery rhymes. lol.

Gosh ... there are so many, but the first songs I really remember loving were by DeBarge. My sister was a HUGE fan back in the 80s and had the records, and I remember when she went to Montgomery Ward (flashback, LOL), bought it and cracked the plastic and played it. "Time Will Reveal" still stands out in my mind. Loved them then and love them now.

Nope - can't remember - there are way too many songs that take me 'there.'

Oh yeah ... since you are a Jennifer fan, do you remember when she sang "Give Me a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer" at "Motown Returns to the Apollo"? LOL ... my mom told me when I was about 5, I was in the grocery store cart and started singing that out loud after seeing that TV special, LOL ... I love Jennifer Holiday. We had that special on video for years.

I like Jennifer, but I love me some and Luther Vandross. I remember the first time I heard "Wait for Love", I damn near cried and I think that I was only about 8 years old or so.

Just listen to what the man is singing about and you will know why I love Luther.

Mines would be "savin all my love for you" from Whitney.

Now...vintage Lutha or pre-crack Whitney...I can get into that.
