Morning Edition - 1/26/06

Unpredictable; More Like Unbearable
Jamie Foxx shocked us all when he unleashed his enormous talent on the big screen playing legendary crooner Ray Charles. His Oscar winning performance will be remembered for his outstanding acting, soulful singing voice and ability to convey raw emotion. Unfortunately, last night’s NBC special of Jamie Foxx, Unpredictable did everything to show what happens when the right person is placed on the wrong stage. I, like many of you, received the e-mail alleging NBC was not promoting the special because Foxx insisted on doing the show his way – angering the heads at the network and inciting their snub of the show. The truth looked more like Foxx muscled his way into getting a special and fell straight on his face in the process. Throughout the special there were skits depicting young Jamie growing up with his grandma, but rather than feeling a sense of warmth from his upbringing, you got the sense that granny was cold, unnecessarily stern and guilt imposing. Her side comments, shown as outspoken prayers, pale in comparison to the self-esteem shots she takes at the kid – even sniffing behind him before school and asking if he used soap when he bathed. The saving grace of the show was the line-up of sparsely scattered mega stars joining Foxx onstage. Stevie Wonder, who is the consummate professional and always sounds like his recordings, was backed-up by a disheveled and sometimes off-pitch Foxx. Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Common and Angie Stone also joined Foxx. Even experienced Blige, who sounds great in all of her live performances of late, looked at Foxx perplexed. The stage was cluttered with Pimps-Up-Hoes-Down-esque dancers who were so uncoordinated and unrehearsed one of the Hookah-look-alikes virtually knocked Foxx’s microphone stand down during one of her hoochy mama kicks. Putting the final nail in the Unpredictable coffin was Foxx’s quirky and Usher-fied wardrobe. He was a cross between Usher and Alicia Keys with Sears footwear. Note to Foxx: Stick to the big screen, take the advice of seasoned network executives and stop wielding the power of the golden statue to get your way. You’re attempt to blow-up your new release Unpredictable was just unbearable.

Farewell to the Twin Within
It’s 2006, time to get like the year – even; with ourselves that is. This year we will vow to:
Accept the truth
· About ourselves
· About others
· About our circumstances
See the glass as half full
· We will remain positive in spite of what comes our way
· We will recognize that it’s never as bad as it seems
· We will count our blessing and recognize that great health, good looks and a fairly comfortable life are nothing to complain about
Release the demons
· It’s not a cliché, you are your worst enemy
· Let go of the anger, sorrow and regrets consuming you. Forgive even the unforgivable. Don’t allow your past to overtake your future.
Live
· Take intelligent risks
· Visualize the person you want to become and focus on becoming him/her
· Be silly, laugh-out-loud, don’t take everything so seriously
· Remember how you want to be seen and work toward putting that person out front

On Blast
Jennifer Lopez is a vision of beauty, strength, determination and success at a time when women of her culture, build and talent were not recognized in Hollywood. Beyonce proved that stunning looks, hard work and an enormous voice could propel you into the hearts and homes of millions. Halle Berry exemplifies a woman who in her late thirties can put women 15 years her junior to shame with her mesmerizing physique and versatile acting chops. Of the three, whom do you believe is the greater success and why?

Keep passin’ the open windows…

Actual, I think that Halle and J-LO are two beautiful sick b&^**s. There are always people who will rise to the top of their profession. Does that mean they are the most qualified, NOT, they are the chosen ones.

I think that B is the most stable minded of the three but, she doesn't put a rise in my pants either. I like woman who own their image and B is just performing a show and it appears that way on camera. She's a fish out of water where she can't wait to return to her comfort zone.

Now, if you want to put a Patti, Nancy or even Bett in the picture things would change. These ladies are very sound and comfortable in their skin. If only they could touch mine.....WOW!

Excellent question! I really feel that they all have paved the way for women and are very successful. I love them all. I want to put Beyonce out there and give her some credit because she has paved a way for America to except the fact that thick women can achieve anything. America portrays sexy as being small or skinny and I don't think that is the only beauty. Beauty comes from different aspects and Beyonce has soared very high being a thick woman with a beautiful voice and a beautiful face.

First to the question at hand…
Of the three ladies, Jennifer Lopez represents the greatest success in that she came from humble beginnings, fought to achieve her dream – even when that dream went against her folks, and made herself into a triple threat multi-millionaire in an industry that had a completely different view of what being a celebrity entailed. Beyonce had the benefit of a supportive family structure, the consistent push to succeed from a savvy father and a mom who had more fashion sense than the house of Gucci. Halle Berry is the beauty queen turned actress who, as mentioned by others, appears to have esteem issues. This explains why such a flawless beauty would be consistently played by her partners. To be clear, all these women have it…you know, that certain something that keeps you from taking your eyes off of them. Either you want to be with them or you want to be them – in any case they’re amazing. The reason J-Lo is such a stand-out persona to me is not (just) her booty…it’s her strength: Whether you’d argue that she slept her way to the top, the point is she picked the right players to sleep with and knew when they served their purpose. None – not even Diddy and his club shooting incident – was able to take her down. Also, it appears that all her exes hold a torch for Jenny from the block…a good barometer for gauging how good your sh*t actually is. As an abused wife in Enough, a maid in Maid in Manhattan or a dance instructor in Shall We Dance, J-Lo is believable and more important, breathtaking. Her ads for renowned designer Louie Vutton proved she could model with the best of them and her own fragrance and clothing line have shown profits in the millions. In addition, her recordings have sold in the millions – an incredible feat when you realize the girl can’t really sing. I’d jump the fence and stay on that side for the girl… sure, I’d come up to the fence and look across longingly, but gosh-darn, I wouldn’t lift hand nor foot to get back to the other side.

Cas, Just Me… Get over yourselves… recognize success…stop hatin’.
And Cas… honey… you may be strong, beautiful, etc., but you are handling circumstances you created for yourself and though admirable it’s also the mark of a respectable human being. Let’s not get it twisted. I mean, J-Lo could’ve stayed in the boogie down and pushed out three kids…but she decided a different course.

J’Moo… you’re an angel… thanks. Just wait until the summer…I’ll be doing the Joker line from Batman… “Wait ‘til they get a load’a me!”

I THINK ALL THREE WOMEN ARE SUCCESSES, HOW GREAT THEY ARE IS STILL YET TO BE PROVED. DONT GET ME WRONG, I'M PROUD OF THEIR SUCCESS, BUT YOU DON'T GET TO BE GREAT PLAYING DRESSUP, OR JUST HAVING A FEW ALBUMS OR A MEGABUCK MOVIE. THEY ARE MOST DEFINITELY GOOD EXAMPLES OF FUTURE GREATNESS. IT IS UNFEAR TO COMPARE THESE WOMEN IN MY OPINION, THEIR SELF MADE SUCCESS IS SIMILAR BUT THEY WALK IN DIFFERENT SHOES. WE ARE DOING A DISSERVICE TO THEM WHEN WE TRY TO MEASURE THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS HOWEVER, HAVING SAID THAT, I WOULD SAY THAT OF THE THREE, HALLE BERRY IN MY OPINION SEEMS TO BE MOST COMFORTABLE IN HER OWN SKIN. AS ENORMOUSLY TALENTED AS J/LO AND BYONCE ARE, THEIR PERSONAS ALWAYS SEEM REHEARSED. THEY WILL ALL GET THERE EVENTUALLY.

Caspar608 - I acknowledge you because I can only assume you've been through a lot and my hat goes off to you to acknowledge yourself and believe you are the best and I agree with you. As individuals and more importantly as individual women it's important (I've learned for myself) that we love and acknowledge ourselves, so i just wanted u to know that I agree and respect your answer.

As for my answer to the question to me it's Holly Berry. Why because she's been through a lot w/the men and the fact that she thought of herself ugly and she still gets up and dust's it off and tries again like Jay Lo's song. To me I don't know Jay Lo is ok but I am not a great fan of hers and Beyonce she's good to but they don't really do anything for me personally sorry. I relate and like more Holly.

For me it's a ashame about Whitney because I truly loved her and after her song about loving herself and then being where she's at it's very dissapointing but u know what having made my man mistakes with 2 men in my life I can be compassionate and a little understanding.

But back to you Caspar for us women I have personally learned that it's extremly important for us love ourselves and think we're the bomb so we don't fall victim and give so much of ourselves to men where we actually fuck ourselves (specifically speaking of me).

Ciao Krissy

OH! AND COCOARICAN....THEY ALL HAVE ESTEEM ISSUES, ESPECIALLY J/LO, COME ON NOW! THREE HUSBANDS IN 4 YEARS, OBVOUSLY THE LADY LOVES WEDDINGS AND DON'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT MARRIAGE......BEYONCE'S INABILITY TO WORK WITH OTHER PRETTY TALENTED WOMEN WITH OUT FEELING THREATENED OR SABOTAGING THEIR EFFORTS, BUT WE WOULDN'T GO THERE. BUT THIS PROVES A POINT MADE EARLIER THAT COMPARING THESE WOMEN IS UNFAIR. THEIR PATHS ARE DIFFERENT BUT RIGHT NOW NONE OF THEIR SUCCESSES IS GREATER THAN THE OTHER.

J-Lo has the least self esteem issues. She had to overcome a weight issue, an accent and the Bronx-stain to be seen as the perennial fashion trend-setter and celebrity. It hasn’t been three weddings in four years – it’s been three weddings in the last ten-or-eleven years… most important, not one of her exes appears to be complaining, bad mouthing or saying one word about the icon. Even the tabloids have mentioned her intolerance to be cheated on – so I salute a woman that says, play me once and you’re f*ckin’ out of here! She’s presently with the man most have described as the love of her life. Are either of the other two beauties married? NOT. Even Halle, who has the blessing of bangin’ HOT and gorgeous Michael Ealey (sp) says she’ll never marry him. Gun shy? Afraid of an azz whoppin’?! Who knows… Beyonce and Jay-Z – PUH-LEEZ. Older and with a face that can stop a two truck…guess B wants kids that look like her dear baby-sis Solange. Enuf said…

I agree with the J-Ho bits. That girl has some serious issues when it comes to marriage and relationships in general. Halle would rather not remarry for fear of failing again, whereas, Ms. J-Lo is a serial marrier. I predict she will divorce Marc Anthony _ you call Jay - Z ugly?! Marc Anthony looks like a wet anorexic rat - and remarry YET again. Matthew McConaughey (from the wedding planner) would have been good for her, but she is a control freak and he is a wild man from what I understand.
Jennifer Lopez is undeniably a beautiful woman with all of her makeup on and that neat little nose job she got. But lets be real...her acting skills are mediocre and her voice lacks range. Her clothing designs are inspired by Fordham Road fashion sense....which is why she is successful, ordinary folks can relate to her.

J-Lo's Ad for Women Goes like this:

"J-Lo, be her or hate on her"
:::A message from the Jenny from the Block Foundation:::

Someone is a little touchy when it comes to J-Lo, y'all. We were set up to challenge him on the object of his closeted heterosexual desires. He in turn, rages at us in a passive aggressive manner to feel as though he is protecting his fantasy wife. Nice try, Mr. Rican. You need medication.

can we say "rose colored glasses" cocoarican, j/lo has her fair share of esteem issues, too numerous to mention here. the real issue here is that these women have all in some part have made their issues insignificant compared to their successes. to say that one is more successful than the other at this point comes down to who you like and who you don't. I do belueve that Halle Berry will be around for the long haul.

Cocoa,

We ALL know that Puerto Rican's came a long way in getting to American and J-Lo has the breeding enthusiasm that most Rican's have. Her problem is just that she's a public figure and her mishaps are put out for public scrutiny. I believe that we all should push our own and it's good that you can stick behind your people even when they're trashy and confused. There is NO doubt that Jenny has a body but, how long can she maintain that beauty, She's Rican? I just hope that Marc is her last husband, if not, I hope that she realizes that she needs time to figure herself out and what it is that she wants in a man or anyone else. J-Hoe's $$$$s come from teens thinking that they can mimic her body by wearing her clothes. With that said our kids are in serious trouble because want to be something that they are not instead of loving the person that they see in the mirror.

Just Me.....I still love you...Just an opinion

Krissy,

Halle will probably outlast her other two comrades because of her beauty, like Lena Horne. I give her props but, if I had the chance to date her, I'd decline. I once had a beauty and she decides that I wasn't what she wanted. We parted and she married three times before the age of 30. After her last divorce she wanted to give us another try and I declined because I was too afraid of her. I didn't know if she was making her men into animals or if her luck was just that bad. Either way, I didn't want to find out for myself. Beauty is only skin deep but azzes last a lifetime. Ponder that....!!!

Cas,

I was speaking about the beauty that I had, one of my Exs. All of her men where abusive or WIMPs and I could not classify myself as either so, I decided that we could be friends nothing more and maybe a lot less if you step on my toes..

P.S. Cocoa needs a little help in seeing things for what they really are. Oh, get ur glasses my brutha, get ur glasses

FIRST OF ALL LET ME SAY LOUDLY THAT FOR ME THIS IS NOT A RICAN/BLACK ISSUE. PERSONALLY I DO NOT USE SUPERLATIVES LIKE "GREATEST" THAT LIGHTLY WHEN I DESCRIBE SOME ONE. FOR ME YOU GOT TO EARN IT. I SAY AGAIN THAT I DON'T THINK THAT THE COMPARISON IS FAIR. SECONDLY I APPLAUD J/LO FOR TAKING AN AVERAGE SINGING VOICE AND PEDESTRIAN ACTING SKILLS AND MAKING HERSELF VERY MARKETABLE. SHE BEAUTIFUL AND RICH AND IS A CONSUMATE PERFORMER. AND I APPLAUD HER TURNING HERSELF INTO A MULTIMILLION DALLAR ENTITY IN AN INDUSTRY THAT WAS NOT NECCESSARILY PRESCRIBED FOR PEURTORICAN BEAUTIES. BEYONCE IS A BETTER PERFORMER AND FAR MORE TALENTED BY LIGHTYEARS THAT J/LO, BUT LACKING THE SOPHICTICATION AND FINISH THAT J/LO HAS. IT STILL HURTS ME TO HEAR HER SPEAK IN AN INTERVIEW...CAN WE SAY ELOCUTION LESSONS. SHE IS PRETTY AND WITH A LITTLE ATTENTION TO DETAILS AND ALITTLE POLISH, SHE WILL BLOSSOM. SHE TOO HAS , WITH THE HELP OF HER PARENTS, MADE HERSELF AM MULTIMILLION DOLLAR ENTITY AND IS TO BE APPLAUDED. HALLE IS BEAUTIFUL, HAS ALWAYS BEEN BEAUTIFUL, WITH UNQUESTIONABLE ACTING STILLS AND IN A WORLD WHERE ENTHIC BEAUTY IS MARGINALIZED IS A FORCE TO BE RECONED WITH. AND HELLO SHE HAS AN OCSAR TO BOOTH.. AND AT 20 MILLION A PIC SHE IS NOT BROKE EITHER. I ADMIRE HALLE MOST BECAUSE HER STAR QUALITY IS NOT STORE BOUGHT, IT ISN'T REHEARSED OR CONTRIVED. SHE IS POISES , POLISHED AND FOR ALL HER INSECURITIES SHE EXUDES PRONOUNCED SENCE OF CLASS, AND DID I SAY THAT SHE IS AN ENORMOUSLY TALENTED ACTOR. THAT ENDURES AND WILL KEEP HER AROUND LONG ENOUGH TO BE GREAT. HER CAREER IS A DEFINITE SUCCESS...THE OTHER LADIES ARE STEPPING WAY UP IN CLASS TO BE IN HER CATAGORY.

YOU NASTY, PUERTO RICAN HATERS! I can't believe you put that fat hip, weave wearing tramp or that psycho babble, let me play catwoman or put some gold teeth in my mouth and play ghetto (or was she really playin' in BAPS?) against the mother of my children!
Black and white women in particular have a deep-seated hatred for J-Lo... I guess the bigger question today would've been to ask, "Why?" Krissy, Freakin' and the rest of my Rican sisters, I'm surprised y'all didn't come out in front to defend and protect the "REAL" (real hair, real hair, real nails) girl on the list. She may not have all the attributes of the other two but Lord knows in spirit and in kick-ass strength and grit - she's got them both beat. So my black "sistahs" take a page from the book of "keepin' it real" - assuming any of you still have the book.

Just Me & Caspar: Say what you must... Just Me, you sound like the best thing that ever happened to you was Rican and Caspar, you know had you gone Rican you would've had two more babies, but daddy would be at home to meet you at the door when you got home from work. :)

Now the Black Panther's Against Ricans and River Dance Against San Juan can both suck a hot fart out of my azz!

No this bald tar baby didn't! Tam I will cut you c*nt to cranium!

:::: Freakin', ACTIVATE SHIELDS!!:::
Tam, you know better than to come up against Our Lady of the Boogie Down. I will expect a full apology, preferably in writing, by morning. The rest of you...y'all know where I stand. I admonish you to say 40 Hail J-Lo's tonight!
